Thomas Mercer, St. Albans, England, rare "The Queen's Silver Jubilee" eight-day marine chronometer, fusee-drive with spring detent escapement, 8-day winding indicator, and helical hairspring, mounted within a gimbaled brass tub in a three-tier mahogany box with brass handles, silvered plaque to front marked "1977 The Queen's Silver Jubilee", silvered dial of approximately 5 inch diameter, KWKS (a key is included within box as pictured), free-sprung with spring detent escapement, bi-metallic compensation balance with helical hairspring, spotted gilt damascene, s#17 with matching serial number to dial, and within tub. A rare piece; this chronometer is part of a series of only 25 that were made in 1977 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered spotting of plates, fingerprint type smudge over "T" of "Thomas," dial with darkening of perimeter which is most notable along right side, some fine scratches and small marks within central areas; nearly mint hands; tub and gimbals show light wear, tub with some scattered scratches, gimbals with good function; glass crystal with numerous scratches; box shows little wear, some scattered scratches with majority to upper surface, left side handle with loose fit that tends to pull out easily and should be adjusted for a more secure fit, button latch good, missing display glass, locking key is not present and locking function is unknown.
